Lutheran Social Services of Illinois (LSSI) is piloting a new volunteer-based peer mentoring program for their Prisoner and Family Ministry division. Because of Faith’s active Storybook Project and close relationship with the Jacksonville Correctional Center, LSSI has chosen Faith to pilot this program. In this program, offenders with strong reading scores will tutor offenders who struggle with reading using workbooks filled with biblical stories. Volunteers from Faith and our surrounding community will be asked to train these tutors, meet with the students, and meet with other volunteers to give feedback on how to improve the program. The initial training will take 3-4 days with the offenders, but then will require a check-in once per month. If you or others are interested in learning more, Mike Davis, the Associate Executive Director of LSSI Prisoner and Family Ministry, will be hosting an informational and training session on Saturday, August 24, from 10:00-2:00 at Faith. Please consider volunteering, pray for this ministry, spread the word to others, and give thanks to God for giving us this wonderful honor and opportunity to make a difference in the lives of our incarcerated neighbors.
